The Beauty of Natural HorsemanshipLeading the large horse into the round pen behind the stables, I unclipped his lead and watched him trot off. Today I was going to do a join-up with him. The reason for a join-up was to see if the horse would choose to be with you after you make him run, acting like a predator, until he figures out that you're not a wolf or a lion. Working with the natural genetics of the horse's ancestors, the Mustangs, that are permanently with a horse, domestic or not. The horse I was with was a large black Friesian stallion named Soldier. Walking my horse out to his pasture after our lesson was the best moment with him yet. The weather is terrible, misting and cold. Mud was everywhere and I turned my horse loose with my friend's horse. We watched the two play for a moment before returning to the stables to remember that the horses needed their blankets on. Grabbing my halter, lead shank and my horse's blanket I walked through the now pouring rain to the pasture where the horses were still playing. I whistled and my horse galloped to the gate before sliding to a stop, covering me in mud. I laughed as my friend's horse id the same. Walking into the stables with tears in my eyes, I looked down the aisle to see the head of my bay Quarter horse. The previous day, my beloved guinea pig, Buddy, passed away and I was unable to go to the stables that day. Walking down the aisle, I held back the tears I was hiding from the other riders and the staff. Opening the stall door, my horse looked at me with his large brown eyes, the look of trust. I walked up to the 16.1 hands high gelding and wrapped my arms around his thick shoulders, letting the tears roll down my face into his mane. At seven in the morning my alarm clock rang in an attempt to rouse me from sleep. I never slept anyway, lying in bed while staring at the ceiling, waiting for the moment when I'd hear the sound of my dog's claws on the floor. Today wasn't only a show day at the stables, but also the birthday of my dog and I. Slamming the snooze button on my iPod, I rose from the bed and pull on my breeches and grab my helmet and chaps before heading downstairs. Lacey greeted me on the couch with a wag of her tail before climbing into my lap for a cuddle.
A little after eight a.m., I was off to the barn, arriving at eight thirty. I listened to the sound of tThank You, Canadian Feature! by ~HarvestMoonMSN
